20 Songs Named After Men To Add To Your Guy's Mix

Men have it easy when it comes to finding a song named after their lady for a mix CD or playlist. The history of popular music is rife with songs written for girls with names like Valerie, Beth, and Jane, among others. (Oh, that Valerie. So many great songs written about her..) Dig deep enough, and you're bound to find a song for pretty much every female name.

But songs with male names in the title are few and far between. When selecting a song for a mix that shares your guy's name you want to choose one that also matches his personality. Therefore, it's best to avoid songs that are about famous people. (There's no possible way that the Beastie Boys' "Paul Revere" could be relevant to your boyfriend who also happens to be named Paul.) That said, many songs named after dudes are rough. Who wants Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" or "Luka," Suzanne Vega's late '80s musical tale of child abuse, on their "I Love U" mix? The Adam's of the world are stuck with that depressing Blink-182 hit about a suicidal teenager. And God help you if your name is Stan. Let's just say that particular Eminem song doesn't end well.

So here are 20 songs with men's names in the title that won't kill the next romantic mix or playlist you make for your guy.

Elton John, "Daniel"
Yes, it's a little weird that Elton John is singing about how much he loves your guy who is also named Daniel. But it's still a lovely, classic tune. (Update: Also try "Daniel" by Bat for Lashes. Thanks, Rachal!)

The Shins, "Saint Simon"

A nice song, even if Garden State kind of ruined this band forever.

Toni Basil, "Mickey"
Chances are you aren't the first girl to tell Mickey that he's so fine, so fine he blows your mind via this classic song. So maybe opt for the 1999 cover by Brit pop sensation Lolly. (See also: Weird Al's I Love Lucy parody song "Ricky.")

Rickie Lee Jones, "Chuck E's In Love"
Perfect for guys named Chuck or anthropomorphic rodents who wear skateboard gear and run family entertainment centers.

Counting Crows, "Mr. Jones"
If your guy's last name is Jones, you're in luck-- you've got this Counting Crows classic or "Me and Mr. Jones" by the late Amy Winehouse to choose from. Granted, the "Mr. Jones" in the Counting Crows song is less a solid boyfriend and more of a struggling musician who bums around with Adam Duritz and "stares at the beautiful women." But at least you can sing "Mr. Jones and me" whenever you're together.

James Taylor, "Sweet Baby James"
Okay, so maybe Taylor wrote this song for either his brother's kid who was also named James or himself. But that hasn't stopped tons of other guys named James from claiming it.

Regina Spektor, "Samson"
Granted, there aren't a lot of guys out there who rock this biblical name. But it's a gorgeous song song that could be dedicated to your Sam.

Carly Simon, "Jesse" and Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl"
Here we have two distinct takes on a guy named Jesse. In the first song, Carly Simon wants her friends to remind her how Jesse has "cut out her heart like a paper doll." (Clearly she's singing about Uncle Jesse from Full House, lead singer of Jesse and the Rippers.) But then in "Jessie's Girl," his girlfriend is being coveted by hunky soap star Rick Springfield. Jessie can't get this Springfield guy off his back!

Aaron Carter, "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)" or "Oh Aaron"
If you need a song for the Aaron in your life, look no further than Aaron Carter. The dude references himself in pretty much every song he's ever recorded. And he always throws the best party.

The Stories, "Brother Louie"
If his name is Louie or Louis, he's probably sick of frat boys braying "Louie Louie" in his face at bars. So choose this smooth, soulful tune, which is also the theme song for the FX show Louie.

Christopher Cross, "(Arthur's Theme) The Best That You Can Do"

Granted the "When you get caught between the moon and New York City" hook is what everybody remembers about this song. But it does include the line "Arthur, he does as he pleases." You show 'em, Arthur! Get wasted in the tub, if that's what you want to do.

Janis Joplin, "Me and Bobbie McGee"

Perfect for a road trip with a dude named Bobbie. Just be wary of flat tires around Baton Rouge.

Micheal Jackson, "Ben"
A classic song with a sweet sentiment, once you get past the fact that it's the theme song to a movie about homicidal rats. (Yep, little Micheal Jackson is singing to a rat.) But it could also work for your Ben if he's a guy who is a little misunderstood or perhaps a bit distracted ("Ben, you're always running here and there...").

Liz Phair, "Johnny Feelgood"
Guys named John feature in tons of songs. "Johnny Be Good." "Johnny Angel." "Dear John," the recent Taylor Swift song that is probably about John Mayer. "Dear John," the theme song for the '80s sitcom starring Judd Hirsch as a divorced sadsack who joins a wacky support group. So skip the obvious choices and go for this upbeat Liz Phair tune.

Fleet Foxes, "Oliver James"
A really nice song for your Oliver who is probably tired of people quoting "Please sir, may I have some more?" wherever he goes. Just don't listen to the lyrics too closely. I'm fairly certain the title character drowns or something.

Jimi Hendrix, "Hey Joe" and The Beatles, "Hey Jude"

Perfect for greeting someone by the name of Joe and/or Jude.

Poe, "Trigger Happy Jack"
If you're dating a Jack, chances are he rolls his eyes whenever "Captain Jack" comes on the radio. He'll dig this '90s gem, which features the chorus "can't talk to a psycho like a normal human being." (Anyone dating a Johnny should go for Poe's underrated, trip hop-y "Angry Johnny.")

Also try: Concrete Blonde, "Joey,"; Billy Joel, "Moving Out (Anthony's Song); Beach Boys, Sloop John B; Paul Simon, "You Can Call Me Al."

I would also add "Daniel" by Bat for Lashes. Excellent song.

I love that song! Can't believe I forgot it. In fact, I think I mentioned it in a previous blog. The video is pretty cool and creepy...

Well, when you mentioned "Mr. Jones," I immediately thought of "Ballad of a Thin Man" instead, but that's not a positive song about poor Mr. Jones, at all. ;)

That said, there's always "St. Jimmy" by Green Day if you happen to date an "IDGAF" kind of guy named Jimmy who doesn't hate Green Day on principle.

Cary McNeal

"Patches" by Clarence Carter.
"A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash.

James Taylor has said that "Sweet Baby James" is about his nephew. But he might be a big fat liar.

"Patches" hahaha!

Don't forget "Mr. Bojangles," too. ;-)

Okay, maybe those aren't the best choices. :)

Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
You're an angel to me

Johnny Angel
How I love him
He's got something that I can't resist
But he doesn't even know that I exist

Johnny Angel
How I want him
How I tingle when he passes by
Everytime he says hello
My heart begins to fly

I'm in heaven
I get carried away
I dream of him and me
And how it's gonna be
Other fellas
Call me out for a date
But I just sit and wait, I'd rather concentrate

On Johnny Angel
'Cause I love him
And I pray that someday he'll love me
And together we will see how lovely heaven will be

I'm in heaven
I get carried away
I dream of him and me
And how it's gonna be
Other fellas
Call me out for a date
But I just sit and wait, I'd rather concentrate

On Johnny Angel
'Cause I love him
And I pray that someday he'll love me
And together we will see how lovely heaven will be

*Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
Johnny Angel ..
You're an angel to me*(x2)
