Looking at the big summer movies, there's a lot of goop-y chick flicks that boyfriends and husbands wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near. That movie where Zac Efron talks to his dead brother or whatever? Isn't that based on one of those Nicholas Sparks books that seem to only be sold at airports? No? Well, it might as well be. Eat, Pray, Love, a cinematic tribute to India and Julia Roberts' hair? Sorry, you'll have to see that one with mom.
That said, there are a few gems that should make for a fun date night for both parties. Movies that look to be funny, romantic, action-packed and heartwarming without devolving into cheesy "estrogen bombs."
Take a look at five possible summer date movie winners, and let me know what you're excited to see this summer.
Knight and Day - Despite my aversion to Tom Cruise movies where he's not wearing a fat suit, I have to admit that Knight and Day looks kind of good in a stupid way. Funny how Cruise is only tolerable these days when he gives in to his inner nutbag and just plays crazy guys. (See Tropic Thunder, Collateral, Magnolia.) Plus, it looks way better than The Killers, the Katherine Heigl/Ashton Kutcher crap-fest that is basically the same movie.
Toy Story 3 - Pixar movies almost always make for great date movies: they're funny, sweet, heartwarming and gorgeous to look at. Up? Adorable and exciting. Wall-E? The dance scene in the stars was super sweet. Ratatouille? Funny, and made me hungry for a romantic French meal. Pixar flicks fall into the category of "movies that make your guy claim he just has something in his eye."
Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World - If you haven't read them yet, pick up the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels immediately. Funny, romantic and filled with video game references, they're basically catnip to hipster geeks. While I'm still skeptical about Michael Cera in the lead, the rest of the cast looks fantastic. Check out the trailer now. If you aren't won over, we probably can't be friends.
Going the Distance - Yes, Drew Barrymore's in it, but the trailer actually looks pretty funny and sweet. It's nice to see a romantic comedy that features a realistic conflict (a new couple must deal with the stress of a long distance relationship, a topic familiar to GuySpeak-ers) for once, as opposed to the usual forced wedding and baby shenanigans that seem to happen in every Katherine Heigl comedy. Could Going the Distance be this year's (500) Days of Summer, that rare romantic comedy that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy without killing our brain cells in the process?

Cyrus - The always hilarious John C. Reilly stars in this quirky comedy that looks to be one part 40-Year-Old Virgin with a dash of Punch-Drunk Love. (I heart Punch-Drunk Love.) Film nerds will note that this comes from the Duplass brothers, makers of the cult "mumblecore" flicks Baghead and The Puffy Chair. Everyone else will enjoy the eclectic cast (Jonah Hill, Catherine Keener) and offbeat humor. Ignore the fact that Jonah Hill is way too old to play Marisa Tomei's son, and you'll have a fun night at the movies.

Just watched the 'Going the Distance' trailer. Looks really good! I hope I get a chance to see it.
And who DOESN'T want to see Toy Story 3? Seriously. Pixar pwns the world.
Scott Pilgrim is ridiculous. I disagree with the casting of Micheal Cera as Scott, he's just too awkward. I hope they bring in the Vegan superpowers. Still waiting on the last volume!
I definitely agree. He plays Michael Cera in every movie. But, he's a big star and got the movie made. The rest of the cast looks great. All the evil exes are perfectly cast. Plus, it's the Shawn of the Dead/Hot Fuzz director so I'm hopeful...
ohmigawd my inner movie nerd just got a boner! these movies look awesome, how did I not know about 'Cyrus' before- I can feel an addition to my all-time favorite list coming on already!

I'm still learning from you, while I'm improving myself. I definitely love reading all that is written on your site.
