Creepshow: Media Edition

There are, as regular readers may have noticed, rather a lot of things that annoy me. The upcoming Royal Wedding is one of them. Not, as you may suppose, because of the waste, inconvenience and expense. Not even because it is a hook on which to hang tourists to be conveniently fleeced - that is what tourists are there for. The highlighting of our cultures obsession with looks and trivia in the media is what really annoys me.

Cut her some damned slack here!

A moderately pretty woman going shopping really is not front page news. Her dress of choice, the bride's perogative, is being treated as a conspiracy. Endless columnists, known as Glendas in the British trade, commenting spitefully on her class (her mother was a flight attendant, dontcha know? How terribly quaint!), her dress sense and her weight.
Slow news day? Weed through the paparrazi shots until you find an uncomplimentary one and run it with some fake concern from unnamed "sources" on the stresses on this young woman. Excuse me, she'd be a lot less stressed if she wasn't followed everywhere by damned photographers and didn't have crap made up about her in the news!

Will she or will she not use the word obey in her wedding vows? That story is growing fast, as it allows Diana, the patron saint of tabloid editors, to be shoehorned into the article. Inevitably, comparisons are made between the two women, usually with the benefit of the doubt going to Princess Diana. Diana being about as bright as a blown 5 Watt bulb never seems to get mentioned anymore, probably through guilt.

Don't get me wrong, I am in favor of marriage, and with an estimated quarter of the world's population expected to watch the wedding, it might well make it fashionable again for a short time. It doesn't mean that the entire weight of the sanctity of marriage should be forcibly put on the shoulders of two perfectly nice young people!
Vows mean nothing if you don't keep them. Keeping your word usually requires effort on your part. Some woman who hit the fairytale jackpot is not going to change that, she is going to be too busy keeping her own vows to help you with yours.

Still. Best wishes to them both.

You're absolutely right! I agree 100% - who cares about Kate going dress shopping! It just takes up space in magazines and news shows that could be used for more interesting, important or useful articles.

Sigh. Slow news day indeed. The only thing that really bothers me about all this is the media coverage...it's perpetuating a culture of gossip and superficiality. People listen to it. That's just disheartening. -__-

Worse still, it is impossible to avoid.
