Geeky Halloween Costumes That Never Fail

With Halloween approaching, you're probably looking for a last-minute costume idea. Well, my nerds, you've come to the right place.

Below is list of geeky pop culture costumes that I always like to see. Feel free to add a twist to any of these (zombie, Internet meme reference, etc.) or dress as a male character instead. Also, I refuse to include the Na'vi from Avatar both because it's obvious and because the sight of half-naked Smurf people makes my skin crawl.

Superheroes/comics
Wonder Woman (try the new costume for something different)
Enid from Ghost World
Black Cat
Death or Delirium from Sandman (check out a Death costume tutorial here)
Zantanna
Power Girl
Mystique and Rogue from X-Men
Black Canary
Ramona Flowers, Envy Adams, or Kim Pine from Scott Pilgrim (learn how to make a Ramona costume here)
Lois Lane
She-Hulk
Snow White or Cinderella (in spy outfit) from Fables

Gert, Nico, or Karolina from Runaways
The Wasp
Emma Frost or Psylocke of the X-Men
Firestar (see a great example here)
Harley Quinn
Ms. Marvel
Supergirl
Liz from Hellboy
Silk Spectre from Watchmen (convince your boyfriend to dress as The Comedian for a truly disturbing two-some)
Tulip from Preacher
Spider-Woman
Jubilee from X-Men (Fairly simple, and can be reused for your next '90s costume party.)
Dazzler (can also double as a '70s disco roller rink costume for those who do

TV
Tara, Buffy or Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Anyone from True Blood besides Sookie (everyone is going as Sookie)
Uhura or a female "red shirt" ensign from Star Trek
Audrey or The Log Lady or Laura Palmer wrapped in plastic from Twin Peaks
Crazy Claire with sticks and rocks baby Aaron from Lost
Liz Lemon from 30 Rock

Crazy Cat Lady from The Simpsons
Xena or Gabrielle from Xena: Warrior Princess
Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager
Number Six from Battlestar Galactica
Number Six/Seven of Nine combined into one costume from my dreams

Dottie or Large Marge (before or after ghosting out) from Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Buttercup from The Princess Bride
Carrie, covered in pig blood
Drew Barrymore in Scream
Sarah (Jennifer Connolly) in Labyrinth
Vampira from Ed Wood (basically Elvira)
Trinity from The Matrix
Leeloo from The Fifth Element (wear a coat if it's not a cold night as you'll basically be wearing tissue paper)
Ursa from Superman II
Sarah Connor from Terminator
Princess Leia in slave costume from Return of the Jedi (bonus points if you included a stuffed Cookie)
Tina Turner from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

Cartoons
Any member of The Misfits from Jem and the Holograms
Janine from The Real Ghostbusters
She-Ra or Cat-Ra from She-Ra (if anyone dresses as Glimmer this year, they win a prize)

Teela or Evil-Lyn from He-Man
Cheetara from Thundercats
April O'Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (bonus points for going as Venus, the sole female Ninja Turtle)
Dr. Girlfriend or Molotov C**ktease from Venture Bros.
Arcee from Transformers
Anyone from Sailor Moon

Video Games
Wario (Mario and Luigi are a little played out)
Princess Zelda
Link from Zelda (with a few adjustments, this one could also work double as a Legolas from Lord of the Rings)

Lara Croft
Jill Valentine from Resident Evil
Chun-Li or Cammy from Street Fighter

Haha! I went as Sarah from Labyrinth a few years ago. Sadly, I could not convince anyone to be the Goblin King.

Nick Nadel

It takes a brave man to wear Bowie's codpiece.

last year i did see someone as the goblin king. he went all out and it was very impressive :)

user-pic

Doctor Horrible and Captain Hammer, both girls. It's gonna be awesome.

Nick Nadel

Great idea!

I'm thinking you mean Zoe, not Wash (from Firefly)? I mean Wash could be an awesome costume too... right now I'm just regretting it being too late to pull together a good Kaylee costume.

Nick Nadel

Ha, yes, thanks. Wash would also be a great costume.

Too bad the Dollhouse ladies don't get any Halloween love. That show was underrated.

user-pic

So true! One of my guy friends went as a male doll last year... maybe that could be a nice easy costume for me.

Cat

I'm being "Sexy Teddy Roosevelt", which is basically just a corruption of a "Sexy Girl Scout" costume. I'm wearing it as a commentary on Sexy Costumes in general. Or ironically. Or something!

Squirrel Girl is totally missing from the Comics section, bee tee dubs! Who wouldn't want to go as the most powerful Marvel character ever?

Nick Nadel

Sexy Squirrel Girl would be the greatest costume of all time.

Also, Squirrel Girl is the next Deadpool. You heard it here.

Cat

For you Nick, I'd wear it.

user-pic

what should i wear if i want to be Dotty from Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure ?

Nick Nadel

Overalls, a polka dot shirt, and some bicycle parts from the bike shop.

Also, Large Marge (before or after ghosting out) would also be a great costume.

This is an awesome list. I'm dressing as Sailor Moon this year but have contemplated several of the costumes on your list: Wonder Woman, Catwoman--but not with Halle Berry's stupid costume, and Silk Spectre (well, I want to be Sally Jupiter, the original Silk Spectre).

I've also always wanted to dress up as Columbia from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Yay for Harley Quinn, Mystique, She-Ra, Buttercup, Seven of Nine, and the Misfits. Myystque is my sign in name for guyspeak.

user-pic

I'd KILL to look like Inara from Firefly. Why the FUCK was that awesome show cancelled again?????

user-pic

Poison Ivy didn't make the list?

kittycollins

this is a great list! i've done a few of these already, starting with she ra when i was 3 or 4. i'm sure i'll swipe a few for future costume parties, too. i'm going as joan from mad men this year, and my best friend is dressing as betty. our costumes are so painstakingly accurate! i'm excited!
are you dressing up, nick?

I was Elastigirl from The Incredibles this year. Wore black knee high socks instead of boots and painted the logo on my shirt with fabric paint (I'm a fine art mjor so you know I've got skill lol). 2009 I was a pretty legitimate Lady Gaga, 2008 Albert Einstein (wrinkles and all), and 2007 a mime. I know, I'm awesome.

user-pic

Fables, Watchmen, The Fifth Element, and Venture Brothers rock!!! Even thought I'm a girl, I went as Dean Venture (sweater vest and all) for "Twin Day" at my high school a few years back. (My friend Ashley was Hank.) I have also been Triana, complete with dyed purple hair, for Halloween for 2 years. Awesome.

Laje Kahr

Wait, a video game list that doesn't include Tifa Lockheart???

Holy carp!

I'd say turn in your nerd card, but the rest of the list is pretty stinkin' solid. :)
