We're rolling out the red carpet for the GuySpeak Oscar Live Chat! This Sunday, at 7pm EST, the GuySpeak guys (and Gal) take the live blog stage to offer their snarky commentary on all the fashions, drama, and endless acceptance speeches at the 2011 Academy Awards.
To get you ready for Sunday's festivities, here's a handy guide to who will win (and lose) in the major categories. Tell us your predictions in the comments. See you at the big show!
Best Actor
Javier Bardem, Biutiful
Jeff Bridges, True Grit
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours
Who Will Win: Colin Firth is one of the few locks of the night. Always bet on the handsome Brit to destroy the American competition.
Best Actress
Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
Who Will Win: Portman has the buzz, but Bening could be an upset if the Academy decides to give her the Oscar she should have won for Being Julia. Natalie should (and probably will) win, but I also have a soft spot for Michelle Williams' moving performance in Blue Valentine. (Also, Grizzly Bear should have gotten a Best Score nom for their epic and lilting music. Check out the brilliant end credit sequence if you don't believe me.)
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, The Fighter
John Hawkes, Winter's Bone
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right
Geoffrey Rush for The King's Speech
Who Will Win: Christian Bale went through a drastic physical change in order to play a dirtbag crack addict. Outside of bribing one of the accountants who tally the votes, there's no better way to score an Oscar than to get super skinny for your art.
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams for The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom
Who Will Win: Leo took the Golden Globe and most of the year-end critic prizes, so betting on her is a good way to win your office Oscar pool. (If the award was for "character with the biggest hair," she'd be a lock.)
Best Director
Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
Ethan Coen & Joel Coen, True Grit
David Fincher, The Social Network
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
David O. Russell, The Fighter
Who Will Win: Fincher is pretty much a guaranteed win here. Either The Social Network sweeps and takes Fincher along with it, or he scores a directing win as a way for the Academy to honor the FarmVille Facebook movie.
Best Picture
127 Hours
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone
Will Win: The battle is between The King's Speech, a well-made "mom movie" that is catnip to the Academy, and the edgy youth-splosion of The Social Network. Word is The King's Speech could be a surprise upset. But The Social Network should win. Or Toy Story. Or Black Swan. Or Winter's Bone. This is a really good group of movies. For once, there's not a dud in the bunch.
