March 2011 has passed, but not without leaving us the eternal gem that is Rebecca Black.
Only a few weeks back, Black, the Patron Saint of Weekends passionately in-toned what lesser artists before her tried to convey: "Gotta get down on Friday." In that succinct phrase she summed it all up; that the weekend is a time to, you know, "get down," "let lose," and "party hard."
Seeing her, wide eyed and auto-tuned, standing nervously in front of a Green Screen evoked great memories for me. Ah, to be 13 years old and ready to plunge into the party-tastic fun that is The Weekend. But, what truly struck me is that while getting down on the weekends is universal, the nature of how we get down is so age and place specific.
At 13, I also would have considered it a success to hop into a parked car sitting on a sound stage, surrounded by a demoralized production crew. Yes, in my early teens, I, like Rebecca, would smile from ear to shining ear if a Black man started rapping for me and a fake outdoor party was erected on my behalf.
But times have changed. I'm older now, mellower, married and seek other things on the weekend. Partying for me means maximum face time with Miss Funny, or watching Rachel Maddow video clips in bed at 3pm, or strolling around my neighborhood bouncing a new tennis ball while making knee-jerk judgment on people out of my own envy and insecurities.
And I suppose that is the greater message from Miss Black's "Friday," or Loverboy's "Everybody's working for the weekend," The Cure's "Friday I'm in love" , or even the chronically moronic Black Eyed Peas "Weekend" -- to go for yours on those two days. Awaken your heart and revitalize; whether you define that as putting on your heels and dry humping a stranger on the dance floor, or kicking up your heels and dry humping a container of Ben and Jerry's, Cherry Garcia, on your living room floor.
As KISS said, "God gave rock N' roll to you," BUT our evil Unions gave you the weekend. So enjoy, live it up and do some....
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin' forward to the weekend*
*Unless you work weekends, are terribly sick, live in a country that doesn't really do weekends or just generally don't get down with the Gregorian calendar.
"or just generally don't get down with the Gregorian calendar."
perfect XD
