How To Pick A Horror Movie

It's Halloween, and if you genuinely enjoy horror movies, that is, you get into them and roll with them, it's the time of the year that even the biggest scaredy-cat generally rents a horror movie, or actually goes to a theater and watches one.

But, if you don't know much about horror movies, you might wind up with a... less-than-ideal experience.  So, here's a way to have some fun and enjoy some scares.

- If You Want Something More Fun Than Scary, Look For Goofy Titles

Not that a horror movie with a punny title can't be inherently scary, but as a rule, if somebody is making a movie entitled "Chopping Mall" (which actually exists), or "Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-a-Rama" (which also actually exists), then they're probably not going for the really hardcore scares.

- If You Want Something Really Scary, Nothing's Wrong With The Classics

If you've never seen "The Exorcist", "The Evil Dead", "The Thing", or "The Haunting" (the original '60s version, not the one with Owen Wilson), there has never been a better time.

- If You Want Something Really Scary, Disturbing And Troubling, Go With The Japanese

Just don't blame me if you rent "Audition" and find yourself hearing "kirikirikirikiri" in your sleep.  Although if you want something more fun than troubling, "Hausu" will fit the bill.  A girl gets eaten by a piano and a man is turned into bananas.  Seriously.  Both these things happen.

- The Same Goes For "Rec"

I warned you.

- Above All, Remember That Getting Into It Is Part Of The Fun

There's always got to be that one asshat who whines about how all horror movies are stupid and how the effects are cheesy and it's just a movie anyway.  He's an exceptionally boring person and it's festive and seasonal to shove him into a wood-chipper.  Just saying.

Jokes about homicide aside, the entire idea of a horror movie isn't "realism".  It's to let go of realism and believe, even if just for a moment, in spooks and horrors.  That's the point.  That's why it's fun.

So let go, and enjoy yourself.  That's what Halloween is really all about.
