We here at Guyspeak are very lucky to have a Funny Guy in residence, and not just because he smells nice and buys us things. We like him because we like to laugh, and because we need to laugh.
Everyone needs to laugh, as loud as they can and as often as possible. Laughter is, in this humble Mystery Man's opinion, one of the most important things people need in their lives. It's good for you. Your body reacts in very positive ways to laughter. And it's just fun. Most of our most positive memories involve copious amounts of heartfelt laughter.
Laughter cannot just be limited to the happiest of times. When you're feeling down, or stressed, or heartbroken, that is the most crucial time to laugh. Even if you don't feel like it, you need to schedule it. If you're drowning in work, book five minutes of time to laugh. Find something funny on the internet (like, say, a Mystery Man Blog!) and spend the time laughing. It's not procrastination. It's medicine.
One of the best way to get through a breakup is to laugh. If a breakup is like drowning, laughter is like getting a gasp of air. I'm not saying that your desire to curl up in a dark room with the Twilight movies after you catch your man cheating is wrong, but try to cut the sadness with a little joy. It's going to feel like laughter is work in situations like that, but I promise you that it's important work and it needs to be done. The more good endorphins you flood your system with, the sooner the heartache will subside.
Because I value laughter so much, I have a tremendous amount of respect for people that make us laugh. Comedy is a hard art, and the best comedians spend as much time as the best musicians or the best sculptors do perfecting their craft. Comedians write for hours a day, perform for hours a night, and are constantly revising their work. And the very best ones make it seem effortless. To be able to do it for decades is even more incredible. Look at Roseanne. She's been making comedy for thirty years and she's famous enough to just go by one name. Or Joan Rivers, who has been doing it for fifty years. Not only have they been making people laugh for years, they've been revolutionizing the art. Considering how hard it is to be funny for one year let alone decades, and considering how essentially laughter is for everyone, people like Roseanne or Joan Rivers are heroes.
Whether you're happy or sad, you need to laugh. Even if you don't want to, you have to. Turn on the television and watch the pros, turn on Youtube and watch the amateurs, or go see some comedy live. Laughter will make you feel better, even if you're already feeling good, and especially if you're not.
