7 Romantic Lost Moments

I have a confession to make: I'm a huge Lost nerd. So with the sixth (and final) season underway, I've been nerding out with my pals over all the various theories, clues, reveals and other goodies.

But in addition to being one giant mind-bender, Lost has always been pretty heavy on the romance. Jack and Kate, Kate and Sawyer, Sawyer and Juliet, Jack and Juliet briefly...hey, they're trapped on an island. What do you expect? Besides the romantic musical chairs, you have more stable couples like Sun and Jin and Rose and Bernard (who get my vote for most underrated Lost duo) melting hearts on a weekly basis.

To kick off the final season, here are some of my favorite romantic moments. Tell me some of yours, fellow Lost nerds. (And for the rest, this is your SPOILER WARNING.)

Sawyer Won't Let Juliet Go ("The Incident")
The relationship between hot-headed Sawyer and calm, geek crush of '09 Juliet was last season's most unexpected surprise. (I felt a twinge of sadness when Jack, Kate, and the rest turned up in the '70s and spoiled Sawyer and Juliet's happy home.) And Juliet's final moments, where she confesses her love for the nickname loving, oft-shirtless Sawyer, is a heartbreaking moment of doomed love.

Charlie Finds Peanut Butter For Claire
("Confidence Man")
Poor, tragic Charlie just wanted to make pregnant, kinda whiny Claire happy. So when she won't move to the caves for protection unless she gets some peanut butter, he sets out on a quest to get his Australian crush whatever her heart desires. Of course, he can't find any on the island (not even Dharma brand?), so Charlie gives Claire an empty bottle of pretend peanut butter in a sweet scene. (The likable Dominic Monaghan sells a moment that could easily have come off as supremely cheese-tastic.)

Kate and Sawyer Get Busy in the Cages  ("I Do")
Okay, so maybe this is one of the "randiest" Lost moments. And while I am Team Juliet, Sawyer and Kate do have undeniable chemistry. Nothing like a little boot knockin' to take your mind off the fact that you're trapped on a different island than the one you were originally marooned on and-- Oh, just watch the show already.

Bernard and Rose Meet in the Snow
("S.0.S.")

To be honest, I have a soft spot for every Bernard and Rose moment. But the first time they meet, a small moment where Bernard helps Rose get her car out of a snow drift, establishes their chemistry right away. From that point on--through Rose's illness to their decision to "retire" on the island in 1977-- Rose and Bernard's love has survived through some serious craziness.

Kate and Jack are Stuck in a Net ("S.O.S.")
Okay, admittedly this sounds pretty stupid if you've never seen the show. Don't worry, characters aren't constantly getting stuck in nets. But this scene is pretty hot, with Kate and Jack bantering in tight quarters over who gets to shoot the gun in order to release the net. Runner-up: Kate stitches up Jack in the first episode, a moment that immediately establishes their connection.

Sun Finds Out She's Pregnant With Jin's Baby ("D.O.C.")
You could easily make a list solely of Sun and Jin moments, what with all the things that happen to the couple throughout the series. But my favorite moment has to be the look of happiness on Sun's face when she finds out that the baby she's been carrying on the island is in fact Jin's, and not her former lover's. Sun and Jin go on to patch up their fractured relationship, and become Lost's most stable couple. (See also: the entire bittersweet "Ji Yeon" episode.)

Desmond Calls Penny On Christmas ("The Constant")
The season four episode "The Constant" is easily my favorite of the series, and the Desmond/Penny relationship, a romance that stretches across time, turns me into a big sack of blubbery wuss goo. As Desmond's consciousness slips back and forth in time (told ya there'd be spoilers), he relives key moments in his relationship with Penny. (Of course, being unstuck in time isn't exactly good for his health.) In 1996, Desmond begs Penny, who has broken up with him, to give him her number so he can call her in eight years. She does, confused. Flash forward to 2004, where Desmond remembers the number and calls her on the freighter, finally finding his lost love and the "constant" that will save his life. A brief, touching phone call that is easily the most romantic moment I've ever seen on television. It's moments like this that make up for the fact that the Lost braintrust has yet to explain the significance of Walt or definitively tell us what is up with the freakin' polar bears.

Best show ever. Agreed.

Signed, Another Nerd.

Gee

I love Lost! Rose and Bernard are also my favorite couple, although Sun and Jin are a close second.

I was sad to see Juliet go on Tuesday's episode :( Poor Sawyer needs a break from all that tragedy.

My favorite show, hands down! So many fans seem to be Juliet-haters for some reason, but I always liked her and was a little upset on Tuesday. I liked her and Sawyer as a couple much more than I thought I would!

Way to hit the nail on the head with one of the most romatic moments: the Desmond/Penny phone call. Never cried before while watching Lost (okay, maybe one single tear of joy whenever Sawyer takes off his shirt) but that moment got me really choked up.

This show never fails to keep surprising/confusing the hell out of me!

Oh, and by the way: LOVE Rose and Bernard. I cheer like crazy anytime they show up in an episode!!

You nailed all these moments Nick. Great list for a great show! That Sun/Jin "Ji Yeon" episode gets me every time! Oh and I am defintely a Juliet lover. Sawyer & Juliet were great together!

Lost is the BEST show ever. I too turn into a big sack of blubbery wuss goo when ever I see the scene when Desmond calls Penny.

Great to see all the Lost love! The premiere was fantastic. I'm still sad about Juliet. I know some fans didn't like her, but I always did, and she was great with Sawyer. Though I have a feeling she'll be back.

Post your crazy theories and predictions here!

lost is wonderful!! i think a good addition to the list would be the scene from "collision" (season 2) when rose and bernard and sun and jin reunite on the beach :)

Penny

When Sayid helps Nadia escape was a pretty romantic moment. I constantly feel bad for Sayid when i remember that he was on his way to finally see her again when 815 crashed. Thanks for this great article!!!

Nick and Cary, what did you think about last night's episode? I know that not every one during the last season is going to be mind-blowing, and that it may very well serve a useful purpose that we only find out later on, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed. I NEED SOME ANSWERS, DAMNIT!!!
