Mel Gibson: What Women Do Not Want

Ten years ago, Mel Gibson starred in the romantic comedy What Women Want as a guy who literally knows what women are thinking. What a difference a decade makes.

As you've no doubt heard, a series of audio tapes have been released featuring Mel tearing into his ex-girlfriend (and mother of his child) in a way usually reserved for the most vile of Hollywood agents. With each tape, we learn what we've all known for a while now: Mel Gibson is a giant bag o' crazy.

Why would anyone ever date Mel Gibson? You'd think that whole "yelling racist slurs at cops" thing would have thinned out his dating pool. Anyway, the tapes are pretty awful but also kind of hilarious. In one, a clearly drunk Mel (sounding a bit like Christian Bale in The Dark Knight) demands oral sex and threatens to burn down his own house in the same sentence. You can't make this stuff up, folks.

So my question to the GuySpeak faithful is: Can you ever watch another Mel Gibson movie? Has he finally gone too far? Could you ever buy him as a romantic lead? What about in an action film?

I'm a big proponent of separating the art from the artist. While I think Roman Polanski is a scumbag who got away scott-free, I'll still always love Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby. And, admittedly, if I like the art, it's easier to look past the awful person who created it. (While Woody Allen gets a lifetime pass, I'd be less charitable if, say, Michael Bay married his adopted daughter. Hypocritical, sure, but Bay has never made anything as great as Manhattan or Annie Hall.)

Therefore, while Mel is clearly a terrible person, I can't say I wouldn't go see Lethal Weapon 5 or another Mad Max movie. If he makes a good movie, I can look past his off-screen life. On the other hand, if my girlfriend decides that she can't stand to see him on the big screen, I completely understand. (Luckily, Mel hasn't made a movie I've been interested in over a decade, so this hasn't really been an issue on movie night.)

Can Mel bounce back from this? Or has he officially killed his career?

I would have liked Woody Allen movies, if Woody Allen wasn't in them. But now we all know he's a child molester so I'm not missing anything except a tape of his humiliating, and ultra painful death...just because it hasn't happened yet.

I think Gibson has officially killed his career, with the exception of other like minded lunatics who will lift him up as their messiah now. I can't watch another Mel Gibson movie, and I'm glad (now) that kids scratched my Braveheart DVD beyond viewing and I never replaced it. For me, the Mel Gibson tapes hit a little close to home, because I heard some of those things from my ex, so I hope Oksana destroys him and/or he dies in a big firey ball of flame.

Woody's recent films that he's not in are pretty great. (Match Game and Vicky Christina Barcelona.)

As a general rule of thumb, if he's in the movie these days (or someone's playing him, as Larry David did in Whatever Works) you should probably steer clear.

Exactly what "career" is Mel Gibson bouncing back to? Last time I checked they don't pay you for DUIs.

Nick Nadel

Well, he's made movies since then. Hollywood is pretty forgiving for DUIs. (Ahem, Paris Hilton.) His recent behavior though may be the final straw.

Mel Gibson has always topped my douchebag list, but up till "What Women Want," I've liked his work, esp on Braveheart and The Patriot. Before now, the only thing I had against him is that all women of my mother's generation thought he was hot. Like, EEEEWWWWW!!!!
Now, however, I think seeing him tied naked to an anthill smeared with honey is way too good for him. He should also think about getting neutered. I hear it calms aggressive dogs.

I haven't even heard any of the tapes/mash-ups/mixes of these rants and don't want to. Just the fact that it happened is enough to put me off the man. To be fair, he hasn't had much of a career in front of the camera in a long time at this point anyway. What Women Want was predictable box-ticking chick-flick fare.
I had intended to see the new Mad Max because Tom Hardy is in it and he is a legend. If Gibson has anymore than a cameo in it, I won't be parting with my hard-earned cash.

Gee

I hope he doesn't bounce back. Although Nick has a point about separating art from the artist, I can't help but feel that if something is terribly wrong with the artist, then something's going to be wrong with the art. Don't expect me to ever willingly give a single cent to anything girlfriend-beaters, racists, child abusers, and rapists help create.

no matter how screwed up anyone gets i always sit in awe and think how the events of life have created such beings. And if things were even slightly different in your own life, you could be just like them. Scary yet intriguing thought.
As for Mel, i dont think he can ever get his dignity back. Millions of people now know how he is, hes nuts. and racist. and drunk. haha. i think hes has an addictive personality. It's sad really, i loved braveheart and a couple others. And now ill never think of those movies and him in the same way.

However, there's no saving Mel's reputation, hes made quite sure of that.
His career is in the crapper, suitably so if hes a racist drunk.
A part of being in movies is knowing your reputation is very important to sell your movies. So he should have known hed get that response from people....
He lost a LOT of fans!!!

I have to say that for the past couple of hours i have been hooked by the impressive posts on this site. Keep up the good work.
