New Sex And The City TV show -- will you watch? GuySpeak Group Question!

Rumor has it Sex and the City will be returning to TV as a new series. () The phenom franchise is simultaneously much-loved and much-reviled. Guys, did you watch/will you watch the show? What do you think is the best or worst lesson we learned from Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda?

What's that? Sex and the City is coming back? I can't hear anything over the sound of my girlfriend screaming in delight.

Of all the guys, I'm probably the most well-versed in Sex and the City, or as I like to call it, "Ladytourage." (I kid, I kid. It's better than Entourage. Slightly.) Between various girlfriends and the need to justify my HBO subscription, I've probably seen 75% of the episodes and both of the movies. While it's ultimately not for me, I do think it was a legitimately good show for the first few seasons, before it collapsed under the weight of too many puns and overly dramatic storylines. At some point, it kind of forgot that it's a comedy. In the early seasons, there were some legitimately funny and edgy episodes exploring sex in a way that no TV show previous had ever even dared. And I'll give them credit for impacting modern relationships with stuff like "he's just not that into you," which has a kernel of truth once you look past the dumb book and even dumber movie.

As for this new show, I'm not convinced that anyone wants a prequel with younger actors or a reboot or whatever it is they're doing. Fans of the show want the original cast and the humor and entertaining plots of the early seasons. And as a fan of stuff that has been constantly rebooted (ahem, Spider-Man), I can relate to that feeling. I'm not convinced that Sex and the City is a concept that can continue without what made it successful in the first place-- a good cast and (mostly) sharp writing. Just the idea of women talking about sex and being addicted to cosmos and Manolo Blahniks isn't as novel as it was in 1998. Instead of dragging Sex and the City out, or rebooting it with a younger cast, why not create a new show that reflects the lives of single women now? There's something very pre-financial crisis about Sex and the City. It reflects the New York City of the late '90s and early '00s, and is looking more and more dated every day.

Ultimately, Sex and the City is soft-core porn for ladies: everyone lives in huge apartments, men are constantly shirtless, Carrie can afford designer clothes on a newspaper columnist's salary. It's a well-produced fantasy. And there's nothing wrong with that. The movies on the other hand, are unwatchable trainwrecks. (See my post on the many, many puns and stereotypical Arab jokes in Sex and the City 2.

"Sex and the City" is what happens when a bunch of gay men watch "Absolutely Fabulous" and think it's a documentary.

The show itself was funny to a point, although once you realize that the formula requires at least one of the women to be sexually humiliated every episode it starts becoming uncomfortable and weird, but the problem was and is simply that Carrie Bradshaw is a horrible person, and she gets everything she wants.  In real life, a woman who dresses like a clown and treats everyone like dog turds (including her alleged "best friends") gets kicked in the groin repeatedly by life.  In this show, they get to marry a rich handsome man they're in love with.  Just like in the end, Carrie was the only one who didn't get naked, she was also the only one that didn't have any character development.  She started as an annoying troll and ended as one.  Jesus, even Charlotte grew up eventually.

Also, I won't be watching the new show.

So I never actually watched the show. Well, that's not true. I watched an episode here or there because everybody kept talking about it. And like an idiot, I went to see the first movie with a bunch of women who were diehard fans of the show. Honestly, short of Carrie, I'm not sure who's who and was quite bored with the entire show. That's mostly because I just never took the time. I'm a bad boy. So um...lessons learned? Not a one. I'll do better next time when four more middle-aged white women with lives I can't relate to hit cable.

Sex and the City was a cultural phenomenon that passed me by. I didn't really have a stable TV or relationship at the time. From the few episodes I caught  I'd say it was a  well-produced, self-important, unrealistic dramatization of single life if you are pretty and petty. In other-words Entourage before Entourage; and geared towards women.

Lesson learned? Yes. This time around I got a nice TV and gal to watch the sh*t out of the reboot.

Pass.

It was a horrendous show, with a gargoyle as a main character. I watched one episode. Never again.

I know the guys are ripping this show apart, but I can't help loving what I love. And I admit it - I LOVE this show. I already have my TiVo set. And yes, I am truly a Carrie.

Ladies, will you be watching? Were you a fan of the show and the movies?

Missed the movies but I watched the show when it was on whenever I could. The ep that stands out for me is the one where we the audience find out with Carrie that Big was back from Paris. There at the same party Carrie was at. With someone else. And Big got married to that someone else... Carrie threw up as soon as she could get away... I remember feeling her heartbreak like it was my own.

Oh God, the movies were terrible! And I totally agree with Nick that a new show reflecting life as it is now would probably be much more interesting. Being in my early 20s I don't even understand why this show was so "groundbreaking" in the first place, because we grew up arounf this new sort of "culture". I think my generation needs something that's, I don't know, fresh. That being said, I will watch the new show, at least the first few episodes, just out of curiosity.

And yeas, Carrie is probably the most annoying TV character ever. Although that might have something to do with the fact that I really don't like Sarah Jessica Parker.

I can't stand it.
Like RP, FG and GBFF, I've only watched an odd episode (odd because the two times I deliberately sat down with a 'lets do this thing' attitude... ended up being the same episode, the one where Carrie has an epiphany about being a horse...ahahaha).

All in all, I have a pact with some friends. It goes along the lines of,

If I end up like this, do what Wise-Ass said.

If I want to be a successful, fulfilled, single woman, I'll just drink at the end of each workday, shop like there's no such thing as credit card interest rates, but most importantly, have every conversation revolve around men... uh?
