What Song Reminds You Of Your First Crush?

Kelly Clarkson recently told Entertainment Weekly that the song that reminds her of her first boyfriend is "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden. Yep, that icky ballad from the band who gave us the "Chic-a-cherry Cola" song. Weren't they Swedish or something? Whatever happened to them? Anyway, it struck me how we rarely get to choose the song that reminds us of our first crush or our first serious relationship. Sometimes it's a song that you both love, or one that says something deep and meaningful about your relationship. Other times it's the Boyz II Men jam that was playing on the radio when you first realized that he or she was the Dylan to your Kelly, the Urkel to your Laura, the ice to your Crystal Pepsi.

So I'm going to tell you the two songs that remind me of my first serious crush. And then you are going to tell me yours, because it's only fair.

First up, is "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" by UB40. Yes, the song from the Sliver soundtrack. What? It was a popular soundtrack. I think Enigma was on it. (Enigma was definitely on it.) For those who have never heard of UB40, they had a hit in the '80s called "Red Red Wine" about, uh, red wine. (It was a simpler time.) Then they had a second hit in 1993 with a cover of the Elvis classic "Can't Help Falling In Love." (Wikipedia tells me that "Red Red Wine" was also a cover, so they had two hits that were covers. Which basically makes them the male Tiffany.) "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You"-- which, it should be noted, was the theme for a movie where Sharon Stone was stalked by a lesser Baldwin brother-- was pretty much everywhere in 1993. So maybe I slow-danced with my crush to it at a middle school dance. And, okay, sure, it might have been the kind of slow dancing where you are like a good foot-and-a-half apart from each other and she occasionally glances away to see how her friends are doing by the punch bowl. But it totally still counts!

So the next one is a little embarrassing. ("What, UB40 wasn't embarrassing?"-- everyone.) It's Milla Jovovich's "Gentleman Who Fell." Yes, the Milla Jovovich from the Resident Evil movies. She had an album in 1994 which was Tori Amos-y and I lurvvved it. (Check out the arty, slightly NSFW, and very '90s music video which I'm pretty sure I first saw on Beavis and Butt-head.) I looked up the album on Spotify (I've long since lost the CD) and it kind of holds up! (Well, except for the weird song she sings in Russian.) Make more music Milla! Stop making action movies that nobody wants like that upcoming Three Musketeers remake which has kung-fu and airships for some reason. Anyway, maybe I put this song on a mix tape (remember those?) for my crush and maybe she liked it. And you know what? It's still a pretty good song! (Check out this wonderful clip of Milla performing "Gentleman Who Fell" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in like 1994.) She toured with the Crash Test Dummies, you guys. If anyone ever asks you what the '90s were like, point them to that YouTube clip.

Now it's your turn. Tell me the song that reminds you of the first guy you crushed on. Or the song that reminds you of your first boyfriend. Basically, confess to liking a song that is more shameful than my choices.

"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin! I went to my first dance in 6th grade and my boyfriend at the time, Chris R, was soooo cute. He gave me my first kiss that night. We picked out Stairway as the last song for the dance because it was the longest one we could think of and we didn't want the night to be over! So glad I brought my Dad's Zeppelin record with me that night.

Ha! That's great. What was their other song? "Joy ride"?

Timely question! Just this morning driving to work, "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit came on and I remembered that my high school crush was obsessed with Lit so I bought the album desperate to having something, ANYTHING in common with him. So silly. Next year is my 10 year reunion...I almost want to apologize to him for being such a weirdo, but doing so would make me even more of a weirdo. :-)

Great song. Great album.

Leaving On A Jet Plane by...was it John Denver? I was twelve, and his family emigrated to the other side of the world. I spent the next month or so staring wistfully out of windows at the rain singing that song to myself. Yes, I was a terribly overdramatic child...

Do you feel like I feel? or any other song by Belinda Carlisle.

It was the summer of 1992, I was 17 and I was dating another boy. He was 23... and he was dating my sister.

It was like being hit by a train.

We tried not to fall in love with each other, but we couldn't help it. He broke up with my sister, I did the same with my "boyfriend" and we waited until the fall to start dating. Those were six weeks of pure agony: we didn't have ANY kind of physichal contact, like not at all, not even holded hands! When we finally kiss for the first time, it was just AMAZING.

"All my life" because we danced to it at a crappy school dance in sixth grade. He sang the lyrics to me and got me a broken carnation for a dollar afterwards.

Good by Better than Ezra. I still feel odd when I hear it.

Milla Jovavich has done at least one song with Puscifer, it's called The Mission. As far as songs that remind me of my crush there aren't any that come to mind. But quote anything from Forrest Gump and it reminds me of him because his name was Forrest.

"Brand New Key" by Melanie Safka.
They played it in the store where he worked and he absolutely hates the song and it makes me laugh because I actually like it a lot. I used to hum it sometimes when it was quiet to annoy him. :)

Radar Love by Golden Earring.

Us cruising around in his black Chevy van. It was a sweet party van with velvet diamond tufted interior, a fold down bed and a loud stereo with a cassette player blaring Radar Love.
