io9 has an awesome gallery of some seriously geeky wedding invitations. We've previously discussed geeky wedding proposals,
so I thought it would be fun to share some sweet and creative ways to
invite your family and friends to your big day. Even if you go the more
traditional route for your wedding, a fun invite will make you the envy
of all your pals. Here are some things geeks have used to make their
wedding invites extra special.
Comics
Many nerdy lovebirds go the comic route for their invites. A personalized comic can be funny and heartwarming--not to mention easily mass produced. (Or uploaded, if that's your preference.) Check out this crazy wedding invite comic that somehow manages to include walking Star Wars calamari Admiral Ackbar, Link from Zelda, and Kanye West.
Video games
Old-school video games make for adorable invites. Many enterprising geeks have used their sprite programming skills to create some truly memorable wedding-themed games. (Getting the bride and groom to the chapel on time = instant game.) Check out some invites inspired by Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and other classic video games over on Offbeat Bride. (The interactive one, where guests play as either the bride or groom in order to get wedding info, is pretty great.)
Old movie posters
I'm particularly fond of the retro movie poster approach for wedding invites. It's simple, classy, and--most importantly--romantic. Casting yourself and your significant other as an old-fashioned romantic comedy couple, or an intrepid duo from a classic sci-fi serial, is a fun way to incorporate a photo into a wedding invite. (For some cool movie poster-inspired ideas, go here.)
Board games
Sending your guests some sort of game as an invite can be a lot of fun. Who doesn't like a fun object to play with? Sure beats yet another fancy embroidered card. Check out this Oujia board invitation that is both informative and a real work of art.
Short films
The age of YouTube has inspired budding filmmakers to create all sorts of geeky wedding videos. Making a video invite is both a way to flex your creative muscles and save paper. Geeky and good for the environment! Take a look at a neat stop-motion wedding invite set to a catchy Vampire Weekend tune here.
