6 Geeky Ways To Pop The Question

In the olden days, if you wanted to take your lady love's breath away with a grand wedding proposal, you had one of two options: the JumboTron or a skywriter. (Both of which are problematic if she has a long first name.) Thankfully, technology provides us with many ways in which to offer her your nerdy, video game-playing heart. Here are six geeky ways to get her to say "yes."

Video Games
Several enterprising geeks have actually hacked into their beloved's favorite video game in order to create pixelated proposals. One guy not only turned the dialogue in the old Nintendo game Chrono Trigger into a marriage proposal, he also made the game recreate some of their favorite moments and display lyrics from a song in The Princess Bride. (Now that's nerd love.) Another guy programmed a special version of his girlfriend's favorite game Bejeweled (can you guess what's coming?) to display an engagement ring when she hit a high score. But my favorite by far has to be the Super Mario proposal that's been making the blog rounds. Check it out below. There's even a happy dog at the end, just like in Duck Hunt

Comics
If you draw a web comic, or any comic for that matter, you instantly have a sweetly nerdy way to pop the question. Penny Arcade creator Mike Krahulik's proposal comic is perhaps the most famous, but there are tons of other heartwarming cartoon grooms-to-be out there. And you can't beat the built-in suspense. Maybe the last panel will be a proposal, maybe it'll be a ninja riding a dinosaur. Oh, those web comics. So wacky.

It was only a matter of time before someone created a proposal app for the iPhone. Bryan Haggerty devised an app that sent his girlfriend on a scavenger hunt all over San Francisco, complete with maps and video hints. For the music-lover, there's this romantic iPod engraving. Not grand enough for you? A Google employee utilized Street View for his "proposal 2.0." And here I thought that was just for spying on your neighbors.

Meet Stephanie Sullivan, reportedly the first woman to be proposed to via Twitter. Since then, Twitter proposals have become something of a trend. (Luckily, "Will you marry me?" is under 140 characters.) Meanwhile, as public displays of Internet affection go, Barry Schwartz definitely takes the nerd crown for convincing the AskJeeves search engine people to make his proposal come up when his beloved, uh, "Asked Jeeves" herself. Congrats, Barry and Yisha. May your marriage lasts longer than AskJeeves did.

I know what you're thinking: Hacked video games? iPhone scavenger hunts? Twitter, for pete's sake? Those are for wedding proposal noobs. I'm going to tell her that I want to spend the rest of my life with her by making a six minute zombie movie. Well, somebody already beat you to it. Check out the gruesome (seriously, there's a lot of blood) results here.

Famous geek idols
Finally, if all else fails, just get the author (or musician, or comic book artist) of her dreams to do it for you. There's a special place in my heart for the guy who asked writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Coraline, tons of other awesome stuff) to pen a special proposal to his starstruck lady during a book signing. Just make sure she knows that you are the one who's proposing, and not the famous person. You don't want security to have to boot her out on her special day.

I love all of these. They're cute. And as far as the video game hacking, not only is it geeky for the video game aspect, but I can imagine it takes some intelligence to do that. Bonus!!

My fiance' proposed to me with a treasure chest holding rings for us, the proposal written in poem form on parchment rolled up inside. It was perfectly piratey and really romantic .... we're pirate geeks :D And we're planning to have a pirate wedding too!

Lovely article. I'm not sure I'd have my geekdom expand into a wedding proposal, but....we'll see!
