Call me old-fashioned, but I think one should rarely, if ever, insult his partner's family. If she wants to bitch about her own family, that's one thing, but that's not an invitation for him to chime in. Even after being married for many years, I am very careful what I say to my wife about her family. It's just not my place. So to answer your question, the guy sounds like a jerk to me.
