No, I wouldn't assume that was flirtatious. Some people use winks simply to indicate that they are joking, since tone doesn't read well in e-mail or texts.

I do think holding out is usually better, but there are always exceptions.
Or she was bad in bed. A few girls think all they need to do is open their legs and lay there. Not fun. Five months is a long time to wait just to have sex with someone one time, so I'm thinking its the former.
Even if that's the case, it's pretty harsh of him just to cut her after one encounter. Instead of blowing her off and canceling dates at the last minute, he could tell her, "I'm sorry, I don't think it's working out." Something. It's cruel to leave people hanging.
As for sex, it takes two to tango. I've found that guys who repeatedly complain of underwhelming sexual encounters are missing the common denominator in all those encounters: themselves.
Sometimes the sex part of the relationship just doesn't work out. And if the guy runs just because of that, then the ugly truth is that he wasn't that into you to start with. Either way, it wasn't going to work out, so good riddance.
It is generally better to hold out because then the relationship is based on something more than just sexual attraction. But as Cary said, there's always exceptions.
