The "War" On "Men"

Every couple of years or so, some cultural commentator decides to announce someone has declared a "war" on "men."  The quotes are not accidental.  This year's is being thrown by Fox News, in an editorial I'm sure you've seen and won't be driving any traffic to.

First of all, this "war" tends to be aggressive acts like women... wanting to be paid the same as their male counterparts, or wanting a career as well as a family.  Which is a weird way to declare war, really.  I mean, shouldn't you be shooting people, or blowing something up?  It's not particularly violent to make life choices, unless your life choice is being violent to everybody.

Secondly, the "men" declared war on tend to be the kind of guy who complains about... women wanting to be paid the same as they are, or women wanting a career as well as a family.  I put "men" in quotes because, really, come on, it's the twenty-first century.  Leaving aside any politics here, as I've pointed out, a one-income household generally isn't viable in modern society.  Beliefs aside, there's something to be said for basic common sense.

My personal favorite part of these editorials is that there's always some guy who says "Well, if a woman won't live by my standards, I just won't get married!"  Well... uh... yeah, hoss.  That's kind of the way marriage works.

I'm all for people making their own choices.  If somebody, male or female, wants to work, let them work.  If somebody, male or female, wants to stay home with the kids, let them stay home with the kids.  Just stop crying about "wars", for Pete's sake.  You look silly.

Yo, Internet White Knight, you conveniently and deliberately neglected to mention that there are growing number of women who see the war on men, like, in the very Fox editorial you mentioned. So much for journalistic integrity these days. God, even my stepdaughter at 12 years old could spot the misandric attitudes in American culture. She keeps asking me why on American TV men are portrayed either as cruel and evil bastards, or, effeminate fat slob girly boys, while women are portrayed as models of perfection. I simply tell her, welcome to the USA.

Dan Seitz

Yeah, because playing the shrewish housewife is a "model of perfection".

The fact that this tends to pop up on conservative websites after women vote en masse for a Democrat should tell you what the actual objective is here.

By models of perfection do you mean like in all those countless Christmas ads I'm seeing where the mother is alone in the kitchen slaving over the dinner or making the house smell nice, since it's solely her responsibility? Because I'm sure many men would be thrilled to be repeatedly cast in roles such as that.
There were females complaining about the suffragette movement when women didn't have votes, clearly that's a sign that the 'war on men' was going too far back then too.

TV portrays EVERYBODY negatively, not just men. Men/fathers are stupid buffoons. Women are either crazy high-powered working bitches or crazy domestic housewives. Children are smart asses, troublemakers, or nerds. Black people are criminals or nerds. Asians are smart. Latinas are sexy. Latinos are gangsters. Etc etc etc.

Society has declared a war on men and women and just happiness in general. They've done a pretty good job at distracting us from that truth as well, =/.

I was so offended when I saw a video of two Fox News female anchors saying things like "married women" voted for Romney, because of their family values, which to me was code for the traditional thought that the man naturally heads up the family and the wife is submissive, because that's the Christian thing to do.

Republican conservatives think its justifiable to pay women less, because women miss more work due to the kids. They just can't stay late if the boss needs it, because they have to pickup the kids or take them to the Dr, etc, etc...so, logically if we can't do the boss's bidding, then we shouldn't be paid more.

It's up to you enlightened 20-30-somethings to break the established roles of women belonging in the home and men being the main breadwinner. My generation tried...we made headway, but it's unfinished work. The wife of a union may turn out to be the one with the talents for the higher paying job, so the definition of marriage should be left to the two people involved and not dictated by business.

I'm sick of people who think they deserve to be paid more than everyone else because of their gender and are afraid of competing for jobs. I'm talking about men from areas that vote republican. I don't think anyone is looking for handouts, except these men. They expect to receive preferential treatment and are scared to death of having to deal with the problems the rest of us do. They want the best jobs over more qualified applicants and they want to be paid more because they are used to it. I guess if I belonged to an exclusive club, I wouldn't want any of my special privileges stripped either. But we can't continue to coddle men at the cost of everyone else's livelihood. Nor should we tolerate the idea that treating them special is good for the rest of us. It has to change.

Jlove

I agree with you Name, this situation is all about male privilege. Some "men" are mad that the status quo is starting to changing. Women can't just be pushed to the side lines anymore. Having children doesn't make you a worse employee. Father's are parents too, and have just as much responsibility in taking care of kids in 2012. Dad's can leave work early to pick up kids, or stay home if they are sick too.
