Oprah interviewed 70's sitcom star Mackenzie Philips, who revealed on the show and in a new tell-all memoir (in this case, I wouldn't mind a tell-some memoir) that she had a long, consensual sexual affair with her father, 60's hippie singer John Philips of The Mamas and the Papas. Man, but the 70's were messed up.
Holy Zeus, that's gross. Apparently, they had sex the night before her wedding. At one point, the drug-addled pair considered running away together, and to quote John Philips, they would have to go "to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.' "
Really? That's a well-documented fact, that Fiji is a place that is open to incestuous relationships between father and daughter? Like, it's so normal, people stroll around, and wave, and say "Oh, look, there's John and his daughter-girlfriend." I'm defending Fiji here: it is not an incest paradise. It is a regular tropical paradise. No Greek tragedies are played out on their pristine beaches.
This is something I just felt compelled to share. As for Mackenzie Philip's confession: I feel like I need a nice long Lysol bath to open up my pores.
I know of at least two women who were repeatedly raped by their fathers and had their children. It's so sad. I wouldn't call it consensual at all. It started when she was 14 but was still manipulated into doing it. That is an abuse of power on his part.
Ugh, some men are just awful creatures. And women, plenty of women do this with their sons as well.
