From The "Not A Joke" Files: Japan Releases Rape-Based Video Game

As a comedian, I try to find ways to challenge myself. When I saw this news story about the runaway success of a video game based entirely around raping women, my first thought was that it's probably the most challenging thing to make funny I've ever encountered. It's like Mount Everest, but made of the Holocaust.

I mean, yes, I could make a lot of jokes about the bone-us round, and how the guy with the highest score gets regular visits from the FBI, and how the game's tag line is "she wanted it," but at the end of the day THIS IS A GAME WHERE YOU PRETEND TO RAPE WOMEN. And it's MULTIPLAYER. So if you'll excuse me, I'm going to abandon puns in favor of just being continually shocked and appalled.

WHAT THE FUCK JAPAN? WHAT THE FUCK?!

The game's called RapeLay, which I HOPE doesn't imply a replay feature, and the first level goes like this:

"A teenage girl on a subway platform notices you are looking at her and asks, 'Can I help you with something?' That is when you, the player, can choose your method of assault. Then you can follow her aboard the train, assaulting her sister and her mother. As you continue to play, "friends" join in and in a series of graphic, interactive scenes, you can corner the women, rape them again and again."

I don't even like going to the bathroom at the same time as a friend; WHY would I want to pretend to rape women together? But it gets somehow even more insane:

"The game allows you to even impregnate a girl and urge her to have an abortion."

WHAT? That's the unfortunate AFTERMATH of a rape! Why is that part of the game?! This game that allows people to live out their rape fantasies makes them deal with the consequences of their actions? Here's hoping there's a feature where the girl's father shows up at your house with a shotgun.

But hey, at least they gave the protagonist some relatability:

"The reason behind your assault, explains the game, is that the teenage girl has accused you of molesting her on the train. The motive is revenge."

Oh, nevermind video game dude, all is forgiven. I mean, you HAD to rape her; bitch called you a rapist! A good rape will show her what a non-rapist you...wait.

So anyway, now you know. I'll bet you wish you didn't. Sorry. I'm going to go cry in the shower now.

They actually have signs in their subway system that read "Beware of Perverts". No joke

Yeah, I remember reading about that a few years back. Amazon pulled it from being sold in America in I believe 2008. Some CNN reporter must have just come across it and (understandably) freaked out. It's a shame that a small percentage of Japanese anime/manga culture makes the rest of the artform look bad.

Nerd rant over.

Come to think of it...Its somewhat similar to Grand Theft Auto's premise really.. I mean, you kill hookers so you can get money to go to a taco stand in that game .

Nick Nadel

To be fair, the tacos are really tasty.

Meh, nothing new. But I agree Nick, that little bit does make the rest of the otaku culture look bad.

This is truely disgusting. I'm appauled. I think anyone who played this game would need some serious counceling, as would the makers or the game.. It makes he shudder to think that someone who made this video game spent time drawing out thousands of images of people raping someone....

Meepa

This is just awful! Good thing we won't see it in america but that won't stop anyone with altered systems from buying it sadly. This is just ew sad and disgusting! WTFH Japan WTFH?

I'm also saddened that now even more people will be left with a bad taste in their mouth so to speak about the whole japanese culture. I love anime and manga (the good stuff none of this BS that's the same story by different studios/creators. Seriously DearS and Chobits are WAY too alike). It was bad enough when people thought everything anime was 'pokemon' but now it'll be worse with games like this... Sad day Japan sad day

I'm having a hard time forming a clear opinion on this one. My first reaction was of course revulsion. But if I think violent games are ok, that they help exteriorise your inner violence without hurting anyone; if I think sex games are just a new kind of porn and is ok too, then it makes me feel a bit like a hypocrite to reject this game entirely. I cannot condone a raping game, but I cannot condemn people for playing (or creating) it.
At least this has the merit of making me question my vision of video games, haha.

I'm with you, Michael. WTF?! No wonder I'm afraid to be out and about by myself at night. I might have "led a guy on" causing my rape b/c I gave him/didn't give him eye contact or whatever.
Good show, Japan. What'll you come up with next? *snort*
