Twilight Saga: Girl Love?

I can finally explain the intense attraction that women have to vampire novels, movies, etc.  It's a girl love thing!

Interview with the Vampire?  True Blood?  Buffy the Vampire Slayer?  They all have the same elements: Blood, androgynous guys, and there is always some lesbian business going on.

So once again with New Moon we have those same things present: Blood, clearly representing Aunt Flo; dudes who look like women--the androgynous thing in full effect; and women who look like they like other women--Kristen Stewart is looking awfully sapphic these days.

Dollars to doughnuts the same girls who so obsess over the Twilight Saga also pay serious attention to the L Word and the comings and goings of The Girls Next Door, another show about women that women LOVE to watch.

LOL I love the Twilight Saga.....and I don't watch the L Word or The Girls Next Door. :-)

Haha, I wish. The real reason is nothing nearly as steamy as secret girl on girl fantasies.

Vampire paraphilia spawned from the pre-adolescent desire for a love that is literally eternal. It helps that vampires never age either. Nothing is more romantic than schlepping with a centuries-old night-walker with a 16-year old body and matching brooding angst.

Notice also that while the vampires have crazy superhuman powers and limitless women/ sometimes men lusting after their vampiric funparts, they fall for the innocent, shy, sweetly-vulnerable but otherwise unremarkable girl-next door type.

Jess

Pffft, well Interview with a Vampire didn't have any girls in it! Except for Claudia, the creepy child vampire. No, what made that hot was the homoeroticism between Lestat and Louis.

Jojo

I don't like Twilight. I saw it and I didn't get what the big deal was. I do like True Blood though.

Little Lady

I like True Blood because its kinky dirty hot hot monkey magic. Twilight is cool too - because its lovely dovey and all girls like a little hard to get - unattainble hot guy that wants to die for you but cant!

user-pic

I can't stand Twilight, but I think True Blood is good because they have that really hot Swedish guy. I have never seen the L Word, but I did watch The Girls Next Door almost religiously :P

Lynn

I would watch New Moon for the same reason I pause while flipping channels when I come across wrestling: Violence and hot half-naked guys(referring to the werewolves here).

To quote a conversation with my mother when I was watching a rerun of the "Shaolin Monk vs Maori Warrior" episode of Deadliest Warrior:
My mom: Why are you watching that?
Me: I like this stuff. Plus there's nothing else on.
My mom: NCIS is on.
Me: Yeah, but this has blood AND half-naked guys. You see where this is more appealing to the hormonal teenager.

Besides, if I go to the midnight premire showing, I'll be in so much pain from having my braces tightened that I wont be able to consentrate on the guvenile plo and the fact the vampires friking SPARKLE. So I'd wouldn't be bitching through the whole thing. ^.^

Monny

Or you could put in the fact the the idea of a creature of the night who are almost always described as hunks dripping sex with pale skin, hypnotizing eyes and seductive ways. I don't see the fascination overly sexual sissy boys, but whatever.

Can't say I've watched any of that crap (especially L word), and I'm all female. Even if there are shirtless boys in New Moon, they look like they haven't hit puberty yet. If I wanted to watch a show or movie with a couple of hot guys tromping about, I'd just watch Jackass.

At least then you get a laugh, AND you get to see them nearly naked.

Rae

Well, everyone needs to have a "fantasy", or an escape. I love the Twilight novels, and I love the Sookie Stackhouse novels, but I have never watched the HBO series "True Blood". I am able to distinguish between fiction and reality, and what astounds me, are these people who ask Robert Pattinson to bite them. I mean, I would never hand my child to someone and ask them to bite my child. How ridiculous! The actors are just people who happen to embody these characters for a short while. We need to quit treating them like Gods!

Liz

It's interesting that you say that, considering the very unsubtle lesbian overtones in Sheridan le Fanu's "Carmilla," which was written in 1872 and is a huge precursor to a lot of vampire fiction written nowadays, whether the authors realize it or not.

In other news, Kristen Stewart's hair looks really gross lately.

(Also, True Blood > Twilight, no contest.)

Little Lady

Agreed - About KStew.

user-pic

But not! Edward is smart and sophisticated. It's too bad that those qualities automatically make a male "feminine".

MKC

The Twilight Saga has become very overrated in the last year or so. I would like to share my genius on the subject because YES, I'm a twi-hard, but I'm not exactly OBSESSED.

And now there are the movies.

YES, Rob is a total hottie and he makes Edward seem like this perfect guy who will turn you into a vampire eventually and he'll do you endlessly, but in fact it's all very...weird.

Honestly? I've been through the books twice and it really isn't that good. Edward is a prude and Bella is a whiny bitch that keeps asking for sex from Edward when she realizes she has hormones, and like the tongue action in Eclipse.

Get into Twilight fanfiction. People write stories, change the names to 'Edward' and 'Bella' and call it fanfiction, but it really isn't.

End of rant. Booyah.

I never understood the obsession over vampires... I'd much rather be with a regular human who doesn't sparkle in the sun or live forever or look like a girl or little boy (coughrobertpattisoncough). I like MEN! :)

margaret-gugu for gaga

i DON'T like twilight or anyone in it. i absolutely HATE it. twilight is messing girls up you know it's like driving them off from reality, now every girl well almost every girl is like lost in it. they think that everything they saw on twilight is true and that perfection is needed and without it they will live a lonely life witch they wouldn't cause it's just a MOVIE! it doesn't seem to get in anyone's head. ( ACTORS) (MOVIE) GET BACK INTO REALITY PEOPLE! they make the movie so you'd feel like your a nobody and that Bella is lucky to be in that position but really? you get the message it's like everyone has been sunken into the drama. the whole vampire thing is fake why would anyone want to live with a vampire?

Margaret: Grade. 7

Jess

Ok so, I just went to see New Moon...
And now I can tell you why the girls are obsessed with this particular movie.

ROCK HARD ABS, BABY. SO MUCH ROCK HARD ABS.
Ahem.

meiggs

Read the books. Will probs see the movie. I really don't think they're that great.
However, True Blood and the Sookie Stackhouse series are phenomenal.
Can men please stop trying to analyze why women like vampires? Have you even SEEN Alexander Skaarsgard????

Little Lady

yeah the books are wayyyy better!

Michael Swaim

I think we can ALL appreciate some well-placed androgyny. You look at Bowie circa 1980 and tell me you don't wanna get with him and his huge cod-piece.

raini

@Swaim : I'd definitely get with Bowie in The Labyrinth! Now that's hott!

user-pic

There is NOTHING sapphic and teen angsty about TrueBlood.

Nothing got my hetero blood pumping more than the episodes where Sookie and Bill went at it in the graveyard, with him covered in dirt! Or the one where Sookie dreamed she was naked in bed with an equally naked Eric!

HOT!

meiggs

Way to get my hormones pumping ... roar.

Jess

WHAT? SOOKIE AND ERIC NAKED FANTASY?!?!?!
Shit, I seriously need to get watching the second season.

Rae

I can't wait for the second season to come out on dvd next month! I own season one and it gets my blood pumping as well! I didn't expect it to be so, so.... visually stimulating! LOL. :)

I agree with the earlier post that an idealized eternal teenage romance is a large part of the twilight appeal.
Additionally, young women (particularly teenage girls) like feminine males because they are non-threatening. This is particularly appealing when juxtaposed with the idea that vampires are very threatening. In other words, this pouty lipped, shaggy maned, intensely sensitive man is also so ferocious, he'll love and protect his mate for all time.
The series actually terrifies me because it glorifies teenage love while minimizing self worth. The main character de-evolves from an independantly minded, intelligent young woman to a weak willed simpering twit who spends her days obsessing over her (contrived) tragic romance. Makes me miss the "Girl Power" days of the 90's haha.

Megan

I have a thing for good looking brown men with long hair who can morph into werewolves. Fuck the vampires, bring on the brawn!

malorla

Read all the Twilight books and loved them, even though I know they're crap! But sometimes, even though you know you shouldn't, you want a cheeseburger. Speaking of which, Twifans and non Twifans alike should check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daTTOyu-E1w it's hilarious!
Seriously though. Bella is a pathetic, drop-everything-for-your-man kinda girl, who I have no time for. Plus the whole give up everything to be with the one you love, who you've known a few months bit really gets to me. And Edward just got more and more blah and almost fatherly as the stories went on. Now Jacob, on the other hand was her friend and put up with her through all her crazy and still loved her.
Plus, he washes his hair and his abs didn't have to be painted on for the movie. I'm just sayin.......

I have to say that for the last couple of hours i have been hooked by the impressive articles on this site. Keep up the good work.

user-pic

hahha I agree

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
