As the guy who knows the most about living on nothing, and to celebrate the season finale Tuesday night, I got dispatched to talk to Laura, the mother and the hardest worker of the family, about the series.
Tell us more about how living with MS affects you.
Thankfully, my MS has not progressed since I was diagnosed 5 years ago. Every day I live with fatigue, imbalance and occasionally slurred speech. These are things I have learned to deal with, (even though the speech issue is the most embarrassing at times).
What three things can you simply not live without?
Family, faith and friends.
Why don't the children seem to do any household chores?
The kids do all the chores around the house (besides our room). They have a designated "chore day" which is on Thursdays but in between they are expected to keep up the house.
Spill it on the truck. Seriously, I'd have paid $1500 for that, tops.
Todd's line of work requires a truck. The van was getting beat up and
it needed to be preserved since our whole family can't fit in any of
the other vehicles. As far as the value goes, it's true about Todd's
"new" truck's worth. Because it is a diesel with low miles,
it retains it's value and it was a good choice.
Combining
two families is difficult at the best of times. There seems to be
some intense rivalry going on in spots - how do you handle it?
Blending a family is one of the most difficult yet rewarding things I have ever done in my life. It definitely takes patience and we rely on the family members that are not feeling emotional about certain issues to carry us through when things heat up. We are human and there are times when we feel like giving up but thank God we snap out of it.
As a decent
cook, I gotta ask why you don't cook at home much more. Is that just
a show thing, or is it your real lifestyle?
When money was good, we were more involved in extracurricular activities (club sports) so we would often grab fast food on the go. We have always managed to make family dinners a priority and we all chip in when it comes to preparing our meals. Todd usually grills, I bake or cook the main meals and the kids make the salads and the side dishes.
Laura then shares her tips:
Everything can be purchased on sale, of course:
1. Basic noodles/pasta and add a can of beans and diced tomatoes with garlic pepper
2. We love breakfast for dinner: French toast , pancakes, eggs, etc.. Make it on a specific night such as "Monday Night Breakfast Night" t make it feel special.
3. Day and Night sandwich as invented by our boys on season one episode 5: hoagies, eggs, ground sausage, flank steak and romaine lettuce.
4. The new "tortilla stuffers" are a great quick meal and they are pretty good for you. If you get them on sale you can get each bag (it says it serves 5 per bag but it's more like 2 or 3) for as low as $1.50. Just add shredded lettuce and tortillas.
5. In a pinch, add hot dog to Mac and Cheese.
6. Chicken flavored rice, lean ground beef or turkey and scrambled eggs (you can add veggies such as onions and green peppers).
7. Spanish Casserole: layer bottom of a baking pan with Frittos. Add browned ground beef, black beans, lettuce, diced tomato, diced onion, avocado and shredded cheese. Bake at 350 long enough to melt the cheese.
8. If shrimp is on sale this is a delicious recipe. Peel and remove tails of shrimp. Place flat on broiler pan and pour Italian dressing (I like Wishbone) on top. Broil for 5 minutes or until cooked. Add on top of linguine.
Something that all the readers will be curious about -
how does having cameras following you impact your personal life?
In
order to have a "real" reality show the key is to forget
the cameras even there. We took this show very seriously and we never
wanted to mislead the viewers that were investing their time each
week to watch our family. We let our guards down so we could give an
accurate portrayal of our life.
So there we have it. A small peek behind the scenes of an ordinary family in an extraordinary though all to common situation. As usual, you can hit up the Facebook page and ask Laura, Todd or the kids your questions.
I like the show but it's just seriously an inappropriate show. A family with 7 children like my own complaining about not being rich any more. I think it's really just wrong. Every family struggles but like mine we don't complain but try to make the best. The house they are living in is ridiculous. Dreams are the only thing that comes to mind for me. To me they are extremely luck and need to stop complaining
To me, you're missing the point, Tori. The rise of the middle class in the U.S. -- and the fall of same that has been orchestrated by the government -- is a story many can relate to. I think the Bruce family is slowly finding out that they are wealthy indeed, and in a lasting way now...but the fact remains that we have to eat and pay our bills. I love seeing how close they are and how they're fighting for their relationships to remain strong and grow through adversity. My family has been there in both sets of their shoes and they are showing the world a great example of finding the value of communication and perserverance. I pray that their resolve continues to grow and thank them for allowing themselves to be vulnerable so we can all learn with them. God bless this family and others that they will touch with their story.
Great show. Will you have another season, or now that a couple of your children have graduated you're calling it quits? Will there be updates? I'd like to know if Rex moves to Georgia with his aunt. College is of the upmost importance in today's economy, there's too much competition. People out there with more than one degree and unemployed.
I just wish when Rex decided to do the dirt job, he and his siblings would have talked to their mom beforehand, I feel she would have told Rex not to do it, or wear protective gear like a mask. I have children with Asthma as well and it's not to be taken lightly.
The Bruce family show does show truth behind it. Many of us have had a lavished lifestyle and then lost it all for one reason or another. Maybe it's the big man in the skies way to let us know when we die material things don't get buried with us and money can't buy health. Money gets absorbed when we're ill that's it. But there's way to negotiate a good faith strategy of repayment to the person you have personal debt with. The deal is not to be ignorant, face your fear and deal with the circumstance. Be responsible.
Sometimes, we have to make sacrifices like not get our prescribed medications so our children can eat. It's been a couple years that SSDI has not done a cost-of-living increase, yet all the utility companies, insurance, grocery, gas prices have gone up. I feel especially bad for the elderly and disabled in nursing homes. They have the worst part of it. Aching for visitors. RUMOR HAS IT SSDI WILL DO A COST-OF-LIVING INCREASE AT ABOUT 3.5%, NOT THE 4%. Every penny helps!!! I pray we do get it cause I don't know how much longer and can endure these high levels of pain where I'm housebound for the most part. No way one can have a significant other unless I suppose their in the same boat, or extremely patient and empathetic.
I only have three children and I'm going grey growing sicker trying to figure out how the next two sons will go to college, I told them to apply for financial aid and government assistance (FAFSA &/OR BOG WAIVER) if they can't fly on a sports scholarship. My middle son is graduating soon, so we'll talk about a junior college to save costs/expenses. I have my eldest (daughter) in college right now, we chose junior/community cause it's cheapest to get her GE out, now, we're discussing her transfer. Not looking forward to that tuition. On SSDI with ailments, I don't have MS, but FMS, CFS, and many other illnesses I need not post here. I live on hunting down sales ads from local stores and manufacturer's coupons, many sites out there. Just have to find and seek, it's out there. I struggle with toilet paper that's so expensive!!! The cheap ones, I have sensitive skin. TMI, I know.
Where's the sweepstakes page? I wanted to enter this week's word. :o( Could really use groceries about now. Oh yes, grow your own garden too, you'll save money on produce. I grow my own hybrid tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, jalapenos, and chile serranos. Been surviving on toasted wheat with mustard tomato sandwiches. Also, supporting the cause for cancer by eating my yogurts with the pink lids.
The fruits are out of season, but had granny smith apples, strawberries (too small to eat), a cocktail tree which has nectarines/peaches/plums all in one, grapevines, a cherry tree, orange tree, and lemon tree. The orange and lemon trees haven't produced but am faithful maybe next season. Cherries, a handful, so I hope next season, I'll have more. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is the best way to save money. I abhore grocery shopping, but have to invest time clipping coupons, that's a job in itself and looking at local ads. Sometimes deciding, we have to do without. My biggest sacrifice is not getting all my prescription medications and having my pain levels usually from 6-8, sometimes at a 9 where there's nothing I can do but just lie down and cry it out wishing I could afford my meds. Medicare Part D only covers so much and I maxed that out. Ask and bug my PCP and rheumy for free samples. I know they're tired of my phone calls.
I hope the Bruce Family will have another season. Could they ask their landlord that they're leasing from on the home if they can grow their own vegetable and fruit garden??? Can they check what the cost of renting next door where their neighbors moved out would be? If it's less, I think they should do it. I think they rent a lovely home.
I didn't even have a room for a few years waiting for approval for SSDI with an attorney to help me fight for it. I slept in the living room on the couch. I had a nice home with a built-in swimming pool, pool table, almost a quarter acre in the backyard to grow things, basketball hoop, black iron fence, a sunroom I had put in, many upgrades I did in the home by tiling and painting it when healthy, couple of fireplaces, spare living room, cement walkways put throughout the backyard, you can imagine and more than one vehicle. Two hit-and-run car accidents later... I didn't bounce back... Three years later and over twenty doctors/specialists/neurosurgeons/neurologists/orthopedist/physiatrists/MRIs/CT scans/dentist/orthodontist/opthalmologist/optomestrist/urologist/chiropractors, massage therapy/psychologist/orthopedic surgeons and lastly, rheumatologist the confirmation of FMS and CFS came in. As mentioned earlier, I have lots of other ailments I need not disclose, but those are just a few out of about ten I have. I have floaters in my left eye that drive me nuts and give me migraines. Get annual tests to rule out MS, RA, Lyme disease, and Lupus. They're always negative. Haven't had any MRI or CT scan of my brain, is that how you, Laura, were diagnosed? I do have slurred speech too and my words get jumbled: Bed bunks instead of bunk beds, or repeat myself - short-term memory. My bones and limbs besides my muscles ache worse with time and when I'm sick I'm in bed for about a week at a time other than taking my jammies off and putting on shorts to drive my fifteen year old to school. Just a poor quality of life, but trying to be as supportive as I can for my three children. They bring me joy.We are very fortunate and no we're not poor, it's a state of mind, choices, and sacrifices. Others are dying and/or living homeless on a cardboard box and doing without. People from other countries are in worse condition, yet, they can still smile.
Watching the Bruce Family show brings me joy. :o) [smiles]
I love the Bruce family! Bailey and Laura are my favorites. I hope the show returns next year. I wish the family all the best in the future and hope we'll get updates on how they're all doing.
There are more than enought jobs - you just have to be willing to go to them. In Central Pennsylvania, college enrollment is down 8% in the Northern Tier because high school kids are opting to go work with the gas drilling at a keen $95K a year. Ummm....yea. That is not a hard decision to make. If Todd really wanted a decent job - he would move - he had nothing keeping him or his family in AZ - she can get a teachers job anywhere!
What a lovely day for a 3667633! SCK was here
