Last night was one of the most harrowing nights of my life. Which isn't saying much, considering that at my age many people throughout history were killing people, being killed by people, running empires, and/or being Rob Schneider (which just seems really depressing). To contrast, I'm in Illinois shooting a movie, which is pretty much a dream come true.
But last night. Let me tell you about last night.
Last night, I needed internet like fairies need the love of children. Unfortunately, the place we're staying at in town doesn't have Wi-Fi, so naturally I wound up at a Starbucks parking lot at four in the morning thieving data.
To upload my uploadables, I needed about an hour forty of uninterrupted connection (see? "Uninterrupted Connection." That's a relationship thing. Bear with me). To keep the computer charged that long, I had to suck power out of the car I was in, which promptly died.
I called our fearless director, who came and gave me a jump. Then he left, and I started the upload process all over again. The clock read 5:15. Then it read nothing, because the car died again. So Travis came back and switched cars with me, at which point it became apparent that the signal was too weak anyway, and my internet connection kept resetting.
Long story short, I spent last night standing in a parking lot in a rural town in Illinois with my computer at arms length, pressed against the Starbucks window...FOR TWO HOURS. As the sun rose behind me, I went temporarily insane. When I came to, there was a trail of bodies leading back to my bed.
Fortunately, the files were also uploaded.
The real reason I bring this up is that the first thing I remember thinking when I awoke at 2 in the afternoon today is that my wife is still at home, in the house we just moved into (all in boxes), overseeing a complicated remodel, caring for our pets, and purchasing our appliances, all while going through medical school rotations. I immediately decided that my night had been fairly inconsequential.
Your partner should have your back. It's something you come to appreciate on such a deep level over the years, you should almost require it from the get-go. The word is "partner" for a reason...my wife and I are a team, using our combined superpowers to give each others' dreams a fighting chance of coming true.
That is awesome to have. I wish it upon all of you. Also, buy many tickets to my movie.
