Must you be so derogatory of your own sex? Comments like this, perpetual comments kept up by a society continually trying to push the link between revealing clothes = skank/woman who enjoys sex, are part of the reason (and my goodness you're not going to like what I say next) that people get sexually attacked.

We don't make jokes about non-white people being inferior, for example, because it's not true and not funny, but there was a time when it would have been considered hilarious. Just because this is "just a joke, man" doesn't mean you're not doing damage. I know, you don't think you're doing harm. It's just a website, it's just a joke, it's just being silly, but this sort of short-term thinking is everywhere, and genuinely very damaging.

Good grief, Mouse, where are you getting all that? It was one line of text. Damaging? Nah. Funny? Yes.

Carrie Seim

Mouse -- I didn't add any judgment to the definition -- I just defined the phrase. (This is clearly, clearly a satirical dictionary if you read through everyone's entries.) Have you read my comments in each of the weekly recaps? I'm all for women dressing as revealing as they like, enjoying sex that they want to have, working at Scores if that's what they want! Or doing none of the above! It's your call.

This should go without saying, but there's never an excuse for one person to sexually attack another and I know you don't sincerely believe that this dictionary definition could ever be construed as some sort of excuse for that wretched behavior. Finally, I don't think skanksgiving is such a derogatory term -- I'm a proud participant!

I wasn't ever saying that I believed your dictionary thing is an excuse for sexual violence. That's ridiculous. You know that's not what I meant.

I was saying that comments like this that are derogatory towards women dressed a certain way, ie women dressed provocatively are skanks, are damaging because they add, little by little and comment by comment, to a society that sees women as sex objects and ties what they wear to how they want to behave. That sort of society is one that has a lot of sexual violence.

And I compared it to jokes about black people because I absolutely knew that someone was going to say it was just a joke. Yes. It is. And satirical. Sure. But that doesn't mean it also isn't potentially damaging, and as people who work for a website that gets a fair amount of traffic, you might want to think about the way that you portray women, even if it is, as you say, supposed to be funny. Like it or not, you have influence. Yes, it's one line of text, but this sort of out-dated and unhelpful view is everywhere, and one that I will fight at every point I can. I simply don't understand why it's alright to say this sort of thing about women when, if you guys were being racist, I don't think you'd be getting away with it, even as a joke.

i think when a women dresses "provocatively" i.e. showing off the Ts and As, she does that to feel sexy and may act a certain was to give off the confidence that comes with the clothes. I think every non-Amish girl has had a point in time where they were going for skank chic, but it shouldn't be a question in woman's mind that they have a right to say no to whatever they're not ok or comfortable with. And let's get real if you don't want to look like a hoe don't dress like one. They are just clothes.

and just fyi you can change your clothes or job, but you can't change your race so it's not right to compare racist jokes to jokes about women dressing skanky.

If you want to look sexy, or "like a ho" then that's fine. I have zero problems with that. But people shouldn't assume anything from that, like you want sex with them. Your solution to other people seeing someone dressed in less clothes and thinking they're a slut is for that person to stop wearing the clothes they like? I just can't agree with that. It's the attitude that needs changing, not the clothes.

And the other issue I have, as I'm trying to explain, is that it's only addressed towards women. Only women can be skanks, apparently. Which means of course it's right to compare it to racism, because you can't change your sex either. Well, not without extensive surgery.
